Listen to Obituary

Rensselaer - William Charles Shanno, age 73, passed away peacefully at home on July 28, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Albany, NY, and raised in Defreestville, William was a proud American who deeply loved his country.

He attended St. Joseph and St. John's schools in Rensselaer and dedicated countless hours volunteering at the American Legion Gerald O'Neil Post #1683. Known as a jack of all trades, William generously offered his time and skills to help those around him. Throughout his life, William held positions at A.J. Hill Welding, the Rensselaer City School District, Two Cousins Fish Market, and Amtrak, in addition to being proudly self-employed. Whether working with his hands or enjoying his free time, William was happiest when staying active and engaged. He enjoyed the outdoors-especially hunting, fishing, camping, and boating. One of his favorite places to be was at his workbench, spending time in his garage, where he found both purpose and peace. He also had a love for making horseradish and with his friend, Bob, annually hosted a festival, bringing friends and family together with laughter and tears (of joy and spice). He was affectionately known by many nicknames, including Bill, Billy, Pa, Dad, Grandpa, Shanno, Mr. Miagi, Big Friend, Willy, and Uncle.

William is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Arlene; and his beloved children: Justin (Kim), Brian, Gregg, Carrie, Eric (Crystal), and Scott. He was the cherished grandfather of Hannah (Josh), Erin, Adam (Ashley), Kyle, Isabelle, Eric, and Kenny; and a proud great-grandfather to Jonah. He is also survived by his brother Jeff (Nancy), his sister Beverly (Bill), his loyal dog Champ, and his best friend and lifelong companion Bob, with whom he shared a special bond since 1969. He leaves behind a large extended family and many dear friends who will miss him deeply. William was preceded in death by his parents, William Sr. and Helen Shanno, as well as his beloved dog, Bella. To know William was to know his unforgettable smile, legendary hugs, and complete lack of a filter. He was also a proud family "stalker," always keeping tabs on his kids and grandkids-just to make sure everyone was where they were supposed to be-and served unofficially as the neighborhood watch, always keeping a sharp eye on the goings-on around him. A celebration of life will be held Friday, August 1, 2025, at 4:00p.m., at the American Legion Gerald O'Neil Post #1683, 836 Broadway, Rensselaer, NY 12144. All are welcome to attend and share in honoring William's life and legacy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in William's memory to: Sons of the American Legion Post #1683, PO Box 349, Rensselaer, NY 12144.
