East Greenbush - Susan Carpenter passed away peacefully with her family at her side on Monday, October 12, 2026. She was 81 years old.
Susan is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Stephen Raymond Carpenter of East Greenbush, their daughter, Brynna Carpenter-Nardone, and son-in-law, Joseph Nardone, and her beloved grandchildren, Benjamin and Amalia Nardone. She is further survived by her younger sister and brother, sisters-in-law, and nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and caregivers; all of whom appreciated and enjoyed laughing with her.
Susan was born Susan Gail Kaufman on April 24, 1945, to John and Helen Kaufman in East Greenville, PA. She attended George School, a Quaker boarding school, Bennington College, and New York University. She met Stephen in New York City in 1968 and married him that same year. Together, they bought an old farmhouse in Milan, NY, where they dug a pond and lived for 50 years.
Susan was a spiritual person and prolific poet who lived among towers of books. She listened to classical music, split rocks for fossils, tracked birds at her feeder, made drawings and paintings, and enjoyed nothing more than instilling her love of books, art and nature in her daughter and grandchildren.
Susan's family would like to especially thank the friends and staff at Our Lady of Mercy Life Center in Guilderland, and Hawthorne Ridge in East Greenbush for their kindness, support, and excellent care; as well The Community Hospice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, Inc. in Rensselaer. A memorial service will be held in November. Service details will be announced in the coming weeks.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Susan, please donate to The Community Hospice Foundation, 310 S. Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208, www.givetocommunityhospice.org/donate/, or The Alzheimer's Foundation, www.alz.org.
