Rensselaer-Robert James Kells, 83, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2026.

He was born on June 11, 1942, in Cleveland, New York, to the late Lubretta and Charles C. Kells. He was predeceased by his son, William S. Kells, siblings, Orma Jane Charter and Charles Kells and granddaughter, Ainsley Kells. Robert was married to the love of his life, Suzanne B. Kells, with whom he shared many devoted years.

Robert attended Rome Free Academy and went on to graduate from Syracuse University, Class of 1965. After completing his degree, he proudly dedicated over 35 years of service as a senior auditor with the Office of the New York State Comptroller, a career marked by integrity, commitment, and professionalism.

In retirement, Robert devoted himself to the things he cherished most-time spent with his family and umpiring baseball and softball, a calling he faithfully pursued for 67 years. He also had a deep love for travel and was fortunate to visit every state, including memorable journeys through 48 states alongside his beloved son and best friend.

Survived by his wife Suzanne Kells, his daughter Kimberly Kells, his son Robert and daughter in law Jennifer Kells, his many beloved grandchildren; Kasey, Alyssa, and Korey(Sidney Perks) Mizener, Drew(Brian) Charron, Rylie(Diego) Torres, Tatum(Chris Shorter) Kells, and Robert Kells, his great grandchildren; Brianna, Addison, Ainsleigh, Arlo, and Kennedy, his cherished nephew raised as a brother; Jay Cottet and wife Marlene as well as their son's Jonathan(predeceased) and Jason(Rachael) Cottet and Jason's daughter, Siena.
