Mary Lou Acheson

Rensselaer - Mary Lou Acheson, age 71, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in February 1955 to the late Richard and Lucy (Bologona) Thomas.

Mary Lou earned her associates degree from Maria College. She went on to work for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets in Albany, where she remained from August 1976 until her retirement in December 2016.

Mary Lou was loved by everyone who knew her. She was a wonderful wife, mother, sister, aunt, and Godmother. She loved traveling, golfing, bowling and going for a good walk. She also loved reading and needlepoint.

She leaves behind her loving husband of 33 years, Bob, her wonderful son Ricky (Lauren), her two cherished sisters; Karen (John) Dybas and Kathy (Chuck) Taylor; as well as four nieces and nephews, and eight great nieces and nephews who absolutely adored and loved her

Mary Lou was a very kind and helpful person who loved life. She left a positive impact on all around her and will be greatly missed.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked donations in Mary Lou’s name be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704 Hagerstown, MD 21741, and to Shriners Children Hospital: Shriners Children's Processing Center, PO Box 947765, Atlanta, GA 30394.

Family and friends are invited to visit with the family on Thursday, October 29, 2026 from 4:00 – 7:00 p.m., at the W.J Lyons Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington avenue, Rensselaer NY 12144. Funeral services and burial will be held privately.
