Rensselaer – Mark A. Carlson, age 70, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, while overlooking Portland, Maine, on Friday, August 14, 2026.
Mark was born in Troy, New York, to the late Albert and Theresa (Marra) Carlson. He was raised in Cohoes prior to moving to Rensselaer in 1986. Mark graduated from Cohoes High School, class of ’73, and later went on to earn his associates degree from Hudson Valley Community College.
Mark began his career with New York Telephone as a telephone technician, specializing in splicing, fault loading, and special circuit repair. He dedicated thirty-nine years to the telephone company, retiring from Verizon in 2015.
In June 1985, Mark married the love of his life, Lynn. Together, they built a beautiful life and raised a family filled with love. Family was at the heart of Mark’s life. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, who would do anything for his children and grandchildren.
Mark enjoyed camping, boating, and spending time outdoors. Some of his happiest moments were spent at the family home in Saco, Maine, surrounded by his loved ones.
Mark is survived by his beloved children, Alex (Tarah) Carlson, Nathan Carlson, and Ryan (Darlene) Carlson; his cherished grandchildren, Bella Peasley, William Carlson, and Lydia Carlson. He is additionally survived by his siblings, Audrey, Bill (Aimee), and Richard, along with several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Mark’s family on Monday, August 24, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Ave. Rensselaer, NY 12144.
Mark’s funeral service will be held the following morning, August 25, 2026, at 10:00 a.m, at the funeral home. Interment will immediately follow in Albany Rural Cemetery, Menands.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mark’s memory to the American Lung Association: PO Box 70360 Philadelphia, PA 19176.
