East Greenbush - Joseph W. Ouderkirk, Jr., 95, of East Greenbush, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 26, 2026.
Born on April 29, 1930, in Albany, Joseph was the son of the late Joseph W. Ouderkirk, Sr. and Anna (Wend) Ouderkirk. He proudly served his country as a fireman apprentice in the United States Navy. Following his father's death, Joseph was honorably discharged and returned home to care for his mother. This was an early reflection of the deep sense of duty and devotion that defined his life.
Shortly thereafter, he met the love of his life, Shirley. They married on September 12, 1953, beginning a loving partnership that spanned more than seven decades. Together they built a home filled with laughter, hard work, and devotion, raising their two children, Stephen and Marianne.
After his military service, Joseph began a long and dedicated career with Verizon, where he worked for over 35 years and advanced to building mechanic. Among the highlights of his career was his work during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, an experience he recalled with great pride.
Joseph found great joy outdoors. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who also enjoyed boating and spending time on the water. He and Shirley shared many happy evenings playing cards with friends. In retirement, Joseph developed a passion for gardening, becoming a master gardener whose yard was admired for its beautiful and carefully tended flowers.
Above all, Joseph was a devoted husband, father, and provider. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Shirley; his cherished children, Stephen (Kristina Morrill) Ouderkirk and Marianne Ouderkirk; and the many friends and extended family members who were blessed to know him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, March 6, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Spirit Church, 667 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush. Joseph will be laid to rest with military honors at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery immediately following the Mass.
Joseph's life was one of quiet strength, steadfast love, and unwavering responsibility, an enduring legacy that will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
