West Sand Lake-Joseph T. Distell Jr., age 89, recently of Keene, NH, passed away on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, at Covenant Living Health Center. He was born on June 22, 1936, in Albany, NY.

Joseph spent the majority of his life in West Sand Lake, NY, where he resided for 54 years and built a life rooted in family, work, and community.

He pursued his education at the Junior College of Albany and later attended Russell Sage Evening Division, where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.

Joseph proudly served as a New York State Trooper before transitioning into a career as a claims adjuster with Hartford Insurance. He later became a successful business owner, operating his own company in Sand Lake, NY, for approximately 25 years, with offices in both West Sand Lake and East Greenbush.

A dedicated member of his community, Joseph was actively involved in the Kiwanis Club for over 30 years, serving as President and contributing to numerous committees. He was also a member of the Sand Lake Business Association, the University Club, and Normanside Country Club.

Joseph was known for his warmth, kindness, and remarkable sense of humor. He had a gift for making others feel at ease and was always ready with a joke or playful prank. His unforgettable laugh brought joy to those around him, and his generosity and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Meg Distell, whom he married on January 14, 1967, at St. John's Church in Rensselaer, NY. He is also survived by his children, Andrew Distell (Kamal) and Caroline Cole (Thomas).

Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Joseph T. Sr. and Catherine (Hepinstall), as well as his sister, Ann Distell, and several cousins.

A mass will be held on Friday, May 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Henry's Church, 39 Old Route 66, Averill Park, New York. Calling hours will take place at the church from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will be private at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joseph's memory to the Alzheimer's Association Northeastern New York Chapter (www.alz.org).

Joseph will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered for his compassion, humor, and the meaningful way he touched the lives of others.
