East Greenbush-Francis X. Boylan, a longtime resident of East Greenbush, died peacefully on July 2, 2026, at Pathways Nursing Center in Niskayuna, NY. Frank resided at Pathways starting in early 2022 following a severe accident. In the intervening years Frank was never heard to complain about his devastating injuries.
Frank was blessed with many gifts, including a natural unlimited interest in others plus sympathy and understanding whenever needed. Frank was devoted to literature and to good writing in any form he could find. He enjoyed time spent with friends and family in all of its forms, particularly his numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Frank was born August 15, 1942, in New York, the oldest of five children. He graduated from Vincentian Institute in Albany in 1960. He was editor of the school newspaper and lettered in track and cross country. Frank attended the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, participating in ROTC and majoring in English. In 1964, upon graduation, he was commissioned an ensign in the US Navy. Soon after that he worked for a public interest group throughout the Midwest using radio broadcasts to challenge the legitimacy of the war in Vietnam years before that topic was widely debated.
Frank for several years after college worked as a social welfare case worker in Harlem, New York. Starting in 1976 Frank pursued an advanced degree in English literature at SUNY Albany. His dissertation topic was a detailed study of one chapter of Finnegan's Wake by James Joyce.
While earning his PhD in English literature Frank commenced to work as a probation officer for Rensselaer County. For close to forty years he supervised a caseload of persons on parole after incarceration. He advanced to several supervisory positions in that office prior to his retirement in 2016.
Frank had wide- ranging interests. He enjoyed ocean swimming at any time or place, and regularly traveled with family and friends in Ireland, Greece, and the Caribbean. For his 30 or more cousins and for friends and colleagues he was always willing to listen, understand, and offer counsel or comfort when needed.
Frank is predeceased by his sister, Michele van Gendt, and by his long-term partner and companion, Lee Stoeker. He is survived by three brothers; James, Lawrence, and Paul, and by his nieces and nephews Nicole van Gendt; Alexis, Gabriel, and Nicolas Boylan; and Michael Boylan, Jessica Lu and Andrew Boylan.
Relatives and friends are invited to visit with Francis's family on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the W.J. Lyons, Jr. Funeral Home, 1700 Washington Avenue, Rensselaer. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 667 Columbia Turnpike, East Greenbush. Burial will immediately follow in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery and as per Frank's wishes a leisurely lunch with family and friends will follow.
"Being Irish, he had an abiding sense of tragedy, which sustained him through temporary periods of joy."
