Daniel Paul Scharoun, age 67, of Albany, passed away unexpectedly at Ellis Hospital on Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Born in Albany, he was the son of William M. Scharoun and the late Geraldine "Geri" (Nolan) Scharoun.

Dan graduated magna cum laude from The College of Saint Rose with a bachelor's degree in accounting. He went on to enjoy a distinguished career with the New York State Department of Tax and Finance, retiring after more than 30 years of service.

Dan shared an extraordinary love story with his loving partner, Karen. High school sweethearts, they spent 41 wonderful years together until her passing in 2022. He will be laid to rest beside the love of his life.

An avid reader of nonfiction, Dan also enjoyed his daily two-hour bike rides. He was often called upon for his roofing and painting skills and was always willing to lend a helping hand. Dan looked forward to attending family picnics, birthday celebrations, and Christmas gatherings with Karen, creating cherished memories with those he loved. He also had a passion for collecting antiques and took great pride in preserving family mementos and keepsakes. Gifted with a natural musical talent, Dan could sit down at a piano and play beautifully by ear, a skill that brought joy to those around him. He will be remembered for his sharp sense of humor, extensive knowledge of tax law, and pride in maintaining a beautifully manicured lawn.

Dan is survived by his father, William M. Scharoun; his siblings, Mary Ellen Crandall (Rick Butler), William Peter Scharoun (Lynn), and Jeffrey P. Scharoun; as well as many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.

In addition to his loving partner, Karen, Dan was predeceased by his mother, Geraldine T. Scharoun, and his brother, James M. Scharoun.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass at Christ the King Church, 20 Sumter Avenue, Albany, NY 12203, on Thursday, June 25, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will immediately follow in Graceland Cemetery, Delmar.
